Nestled in the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico is an archipelago consisting of the main island and several smaller islands. Its capital, San Juan, is a vibrant city with a rich history, evident in its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. The island is not just a tropical paradise; it's a tapestry woven with the threads of many cultural influences.
In the scorching summer of 2022, my work led me to the enchanting island(s) of Puerto Rico. Having been on the road for previous emergency responses across the United States, I was no stranger to exploring new places, but the month-long stint in Puerto Rico turned out to be an adventure like no other. Blessed with a team of amazing colleagues who generously shared their local recommendations, my time in Puerto Rico has proved to be unforgettable. As I reflect on these cherished memories, I am eager to share some of my favorites, hoping that others can experience the magic of Puerto Rico just as I did.
Before I get too far into my adventures, I'd like to give a shoutout to the place I called home during my month on the island. I was incredibly fortunate to call the Residence Inn San Juan Isla Verde my home away from home. Nestled only a five-minute walk from Isla Verde and Pine Grove beaches, this luxurious haven became the perfect sanctuary for my island adventure. The moment I stepped into the lobby, I was greeted by a blend of modern elegance and Caribbean warmth. The attentive and friendly staff made every day memorable, ensuring that I felt not just like a guest, but a cherished part of their extended family. Whether it was lounging by the pool, savoring the complimentary breakfast, enjoying my $35/day credit at the bar, or simply unwinding in the well-appointed accommodations, the Residence Inn San Juan Isla Verde added a touch of luxury to my Puerto Rican escapade. Its prime location allowed me to seamlessly explore the island, making it not just a place to stay but a key player in crafting the unforgettable memories that now define my Puerto Rico experience. (No this is not sponsored; I just really loved the experience)
Since I was staying so close to the beach, each day began with the soothing sounds of the ocean, allowing me to truly live out my island life dreams. The sunrises at Pine Grove beach became a ritual, where the warm embrace of the waves served as the perfect prelude to my daily escapades. Whether it was a leisurely stroll or an adrenaline-fueled surf lesson, the mornings in Puerto Rico were an invitation to embrace the island's natural beauty.
Weekends brought forth the promise of exploration, and my destination of choice was the lush haven of El Yunque National Rainforest. The trails led me through a sea of palm trees, with refreshing waterfalls and panoramic views awaiting at every turn. The hike up to El Yunque Peak Tower was a highlight, offering 360-degree vistas of the island and its majestic coastlines. It's an experience that undoubtedly deserves a spot on every adventurer's bucket list.
Evenings in Old San Juan were a feast for the senses, as the aroma of traditional Puerto Rican dishes filled the air. Mofongo (try the pork) and empanadillas (shrimp was my favorite) became my go-to comfort foods, providing a taste of the island's rich culinary heritage. The narrow cobblestone streets echoed with the lively energy of this historic city, creating a vibrant backdrop for culinary delights. After grabbing a meal, the music on the streets made it impossible to not want to grab a drink after. One of my fondest memories took shape at La Factoria bar, famously known for the "Despacito" music video. Nestled within the narrow streets of the city, La Factoria was ranked as one of the top 50 bars in the United States and I urge you to find out why for yourself.
One serendipitous highlight that added a splash of color to my journey was the La Regata Internacional por los 500 Años de San Juan. An international sailing event celebrating the 500th anniversary of San Juan, it transformed the waters surrounding the historic city into a breathtaking spectacle of vibrant sails dancing against the skyline. The streets of Old San Juan were filled with local vendors as everyone was excited to see ships sale into port.
For those that enjoy experiencing life as the locals do, I recommend an evening at the Luquillo Kiosks and Monserrate beach. It was here that I witnessed a vivid sunset across the sky while I enjoyed the peaceful sound of the waves hitting the shore after dinner. It was quiet, it was relaxing, and I couldn't have asked for a better evening.
While I spent most of my stay around San Juan, I couldn't claim to know the island unless I saw all that it had to offer. Venturing to the west side of the main island led me to Cabo Rojo and Aguadilla. I left San Juan early in the morning and arrived at the salt flats, Las Salinas de Cabo Rojo, just before noon. After exploring the flats, you can continue to the coastline to enjoy a quick hike up to a lighthouse with one of the best coastal views (in my opinion). While I did enjoy swimming a La Playuela beach right next door, I found a smaller beach spot with no one in sight on the other side of the lighthouse (follow the path and look for the natural bridge). If you like adventure, you need to see this area on your trip to Puerto Rico!
For those craving a more secluded escape, I recommend Survival beach in Aguadilla. The journey to this hidden gem, off the beaten path, became an adventure in itself, rewarding me with a tranquil paradise where the beauty of Puerto Rico unfolded in its purest form. So, pack your snacks and water and head to Surfers beach to find the sign that will take you into the forest and spit you out on the gorgeous coastline of Survival beach.
As my time in Puerto Rico came to an end, the memories lingered, creating a tapestry of experiences that will forever be etched in my heart. The people, the landscapes, and the cultural richness of the island have left an indelible mark. Puerto Rico is not just a place I visited; it's a part of my journey, and its spirit will always have a spot in my heart. The island's resilience and warmth have made it more than just a destination; it's a chapter in the story of a life well-lived.
