What Is Sustainable Travel
Sustainable travel, at its core, is about caring for the earth that works hard to sustain us. While the idea of sustainability has turned into a political movement in the United States, there really shouldn’t be sides when it comes to looking after our planet. Treating wildlife with respect, preserving natural structures, and cleaning up after ourselves should be considered fundamental human responsibilities.
Traditional travel over the years has contributed significantly to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, energy consumption, habitat disruption, cultural displacement, and environmental degradation (just to name a few). While travel remains a passion for both H and B, so does offsetting or eliminating the negative impacts it can have on the world around us.
What does sustainable travel look like

Opting for more sustainable modes of transport, such as trains or electric vehicles, and offsetting carbon emissions.

Staying in hotels or lodges that prioritize sustainability, use renewable energy, and have waste reduction programs.

Being mindful of water and energy use and reducing waste by following the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Supporting local businesses, respecting cultural and environmental norms, and choosing destinations that practice and promote sustainable tourism.
How is HBTT helping
As we plan trips, H and B work diligently behind the scenes to support sustainability initiatives. We currently contribute by donating profits to support reforestation efforts, prioritizing accommodations certified in sustainable practices, and focusing on cultural experiences that boost local economies in our clients’ destinations.
Donations
HBTT currently donates 1% of total booking costs for every client to The Elm Project , which is in the final stages of earning its 501(c)3 status. The Elm Project combats environmental degradation, with our donations specifically funding reforestation efforts. For every $1 donated, 1 tree is planted.
Green Certifications
HBTT is committed to partnering with hotels, tour operators, and other travel service providers that have earned green certifications or awards for their sustainability efforts. Vendors with such accreditation are recommended first 100% of the time.
Promote Eco-Friendly Destinations
Our company is ecstatic to work alongside tourism boards for countries that support sustainable travel efforts.
Green Travel Tips
As part of our final booking process, clients are offered practical tips for travelers on how to make their trips more sustainable, including advice on packing light, using public transportation, and choosing eco-friendly products.
