Greenland An autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland is the world's largest island and is predominantly covered by ice. Its vast icy landscapes include glaciers, ice caps, and fjords, offering stunning but rugged terrain. A quick flight for east coast USA and northern EU.
Finnish Lapland (Finland) The northernmost region of Finland, Lapland, is characterized by Arctic tundra landscapes, dense forests, and numerous lakes. It's a popular destination for experiencing the Northern Lights, as well as winter activities like husky sledding & snowmobiling. This 3-day snowmobiling raid is now on our bucket list.
Iceland Known as the "Land of Fire and Ice," Iceland features a unique combination of volcanic landscapes and icy tundra regions. Its glaciers, such as Vatnajökull and Langjökull, cover significant portions of the island and offer opportunities for glacier hiking & ice cave exploration. HBTT recommends renting a car and completing the ring of Iceland over 9-14 day timespan.
Northern Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Finland): In addition to Finnish Lapland, the northern regions of Norway, Sweden, and Finland feature Arctic tundra landscapes, particularly in areas above the Arctic Circle. These areas offer opportunities for experiencing the Midnight Sun in summer and the Northern Lights in winter, as well as traditional Sami culture. Their culture is centered around traditional livelihoods like reindeer herding, fishing, hunting, gathering, agriculture, and handicrafts. The Sami people have a strong culture and are experiencing a renaissance.
